WHAT IS AN INVASIVE SPECIES?

BurdockAn invasive species is any non-native plant that is growing outside of its natural range. They are often referred to as alien, exotic, non-indigenous, or introduced species. Invasive species often find no natural enemies in their new habitat and therefore spread quickly and easily. They have become a problem in almost every type of ecosystem and endanger native plants and many aspects of biodiversity.

Even though some invasive species have moved into habitats by migrating wildlife or other natural methods, human exploration, colonization, and commercial trade have dramatically increased the scale and impact of the invasions.

Invasive species should always be avoided when doing restoration work. There's such a broad selection of native plants that are better suited for any situation.

The plants pictured on this page are common invasive species.
